2 year anniversary amazingness

Last night was soooooo amazing. I had so much fun and the art was amazing. Also the photo booth was a huge hit. Thanks glasscoat. You should hire them for your next party or wedding or whateves, cuz nothing makes people happier than a photbooth.

I sincerely want to thank all of that have supported me and my shop over the past two years! It was such a risk quitting my high paid corp job to pursue my dreams but it has proven to be the most fulfilling thing I have ever done. To all f you I say this. A Random Muscle guy at the gym asked for my telephone number. I politely replied, I doubt we'd have enough in common to have a phone conversation. He disagreed. I asked him to tell a little bit about one of the following: Tolstoy, Chagall, Townes Vand Zandt, Arcade Fire or Blaire Waldorf and I'll take yours. He just starred blankly. I guess I will not find Mr. Right at the Gym. Ha ha.But at least I can be inspired by 80's workout fashion.

A Certain Connection

Had a day that reminded me to embrace all the lessons life has affored me: connectivity, truth, passion, desire and most importantly, possessing a positive nature. The stress of my life, being a single, business owner has been really getting me down. At the core I believe that I manifest my own reality and lately I have been manifesting stress and an overwhelming sinking feeling that it's all too much.

Had an early supper with a good friend that helped me brainstorm some inspiring marketing ideas, as well as just some good, plain, tough-love truth. Feeling a bit grounded, walked back to the shop and ran into old, dear friend, Shawna who recently moved away. She is a spry, lovely bundle of positivity and seeing her lovely face put me in the right mood to just keep moving forward and finish all the tasks at hand. So to the universe and to all my lovely life supports I say thank you! I told you this was gonna be my year. Is it ok that I'm writing this in a T-shirt and fishnets? I think so. So take another sip of champagne and get ready for all that BellJar and I (Sasha Darling) have to give!!!

Working frantically to meet the site deadline dates. Been setting up press so that site has to go live now. Daily Candy is hopping to do a piece this week, but it seems we are having a bit of technical difficulties that I hope to work out today. The two year anniversary party is this Friday and there are tons of little things here and there that i must attend to and then there is market next week in LA. Sometimes I feel this heavy weight on my chest, like there is just no way on earth I can take care of everything. Thank god I currently have the most supportive staff on earth, which all have the flu right now. I just keep chanting, I can't get sick, I can't get sick. I will just throw on some lipstick and some high heels and I everything will work out, right?

I'm really hoping everything takes off the way I expect it to with the site and all, as I'm feeling more and more like I need to move out of San Francisco and I would really like to start opening stores in other cities. I have been here so long, and this city is starting to feel too small. On Sunday I was driving around and realized there was nothing I could think of that I hadn't already done or seen in SF. I grew up in Marin and Sonoma and besides a few stints in other cities, like Portland and Hawaii I have just been in the Bay way too long. Did someone say NY? Or maybe Tokyo, London or Berlin? Now I just need to focus on finding investors. Which means boring business plan writing an adjusting. Why can't I just do the fun stuff?

So now I'm off, to meet a photographer that is dong some sort of shoot at the shop, get crackin on the web and hopefully find a second to myself to make it to the gym today. I swear very soon, I plan to have a social life that includes way more glamour, intrigue and excitement. Maybe when I'm in LA for work I will meet a undercover agent then I can write about that.I promise to have big 1960's hair for that plot change.

My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Anyone that knows me, (Sasha Darling) well, know I'm a little bit country. Some may argue I'm a whole lot country, right Olivia?

Recently while having drinks with a close friend, she expressed concern over my professional persona as the premier glam girl. It's funny that I never really think about how other people perceive me. I just live my life in a way that is fun and fulfilling. Things that are fun to me: being glamorous and high maintenance, speaking my mind and wearing high heels while doing so. Talking about fashion and boys while wearing fake eyelashes. Being silly and campy and often very over the top. Being a ballsy, smart woman. But much like my store which posses both dark, intense as well as girly and fluffy moments, there is a softer more natural side to me. And it's true, I am country. It may surprise you, but I love to camp and I dream of buying a ranch in Sonoma. I love to ride horses and I can cook over an open fire. I don't mind going a few days sans shower (as long as I have my perfume). I was born in the country and have drawn water from a well and grown my own food. Just like you, I am multifaceted and complex. There is no one flat composite of Sasha which can be easily defined. I am both an intense, strong Glamour Girl as well as a soft spoken easy-going Country Girl.

Which brings me to cowboys. When I was in Jr High and was already a new wavey/slightly goth little girl, I was also obsessed with the Rodeo and would go and check out all the hot Cowboys when the rodeo came to town. My Dad wore a cowboy hat and I loved it. My first real crush was Elvis in Love Me Tender where he played a Cowboy. I have often dreamed Of being Sisssy and living happily ever after with Bud (which happens to be my Grandpa's name) like in Urban Cowboy. When I got a little older I naturally was drawn to the rockabilly scene with all it's Glamour and cool old cars, but I really was in it for the edgy, modern Cowboys types! But now in this day and age, with my current lifestyle, a good Cowboy is hard to come by. Especially one that has that other side....I guess what I'm saying is a need me a city Cowboy! So today I'm putting it out to all my fav cowboys to get crackin' and get me a cowboy. You ready Hank, Willy and Waylon?

The weekend was chilly and rainy and it seems that spring in SF is off to a gloomy start. My mood seems to follow suit. Spent the day at the shop doing the ever so glam task of paying bills and doing catch up after a week in Vegas. We got tons of shipments and last Friday and the weekend was spent trying to get everything out on the floor so you all could come and get some pretty little things. After six hours of paying bills and fighting with my possessed printer, I just had to get away from work for a while and had a leisurely lunch down the street at Monks Kettle. After that I pretty much decided I needed some R&R away from the shop and went home early and fell asleep. I don't know what it is, but I'm just in a funk. It's not normal for me...I'm pretty much an up, motivated and positive girl all the time, so for now I'm blaming it on the rain. I've got those moody, cranky, I want to pull the covers over my head and sleep for a week feelings. So maybe all you pretty ladies out there can leave a comment or post a picture that will inspire Sasha Darling to get back to her glamorous, fantastic self? It would just be darling of you.

Last day in Vegas- Tried to do some more thrifting, but I tell you that town is shopped out. We hot some actual Vintage stores but their prices were astronomical. I really don't mind paying for good Vintage but I expect a boutique experience if I'm gonna pay 2500.00 for a dress, and I will tell you the places in Vegas did not have that experience. Plus I was hoping to find some good steals to bring back to you ladies. Sorry no go, but I did bring home a million amazing vintage home treasures.

So we hot the airport early and had a few drinks because we were just iver the Vegas thing. So here is Jaz making her, pose for the camera, face.

Our first day of Vegas was spent doing Antique shopping and trying to find some good Vintage, but Vegas seems to be a bit shopped out. We did score big time in the home dept some come in in a few weeks and see what we got!!!!

Veges is such a weird town. We have definitely not been doing the strip, big time Vegas so far. We are staying in a crappy little hotel right by the convention center and have thus far managed to completely avoid the strip! But we did go to the old town strip yesterday and eat at a Buffet at the Gold Nugget. I like old town soooo much better than the strip. The signs and the Typography of the old places are so cool, and I love the gritty old timey feeling. The strip is too big, flashy and modern. I really hate modern. (Well unless it's Mid-Century!!!) I wish the future looked like people projected it would look in the 50's rather than what it is. I want atomic and exciting, not sleek and boring. I want bright, fun glamour with cocktail hour, not beige and slutty with table service. *Le Sigh. I was born in the wrong decade.

Anyway, Jasmine and I have been really big grandma's anyway. We went and got Mani/Pedis last night and then went a supermarket and bought trash magazines, junk food, and cheap wine. I think were asleep by like 10:30. Jasmine is the perfect traveling partner for me. She may be 10 years younger than me but she has the soul of a granny. She hates night-clubs as much as I do, and she also has an affinity for the orange food group™. She is my Fav!

I'm thinking that I may try and get us tickets to go see Tom Jones...One I say the Drifters, The Platters and the Coasters in Vegas...now were talking night life. I have just come to realize I would much rather hang out at joints where old people frequent than where young people do. A Beau took me to Bixs in San Francisco on sat night and I was soo in to it. It's like old school and we were definitely the youngest people in there.

Don't read my blog!

One of the issues with blogging candidly is fear that it will hurt the people that are involved with the blogger. I think it is important to bring the readers of "gorgeous little things" an honest look at what makes my life so beautiful and glamorous. There is much more to life than just wearing pretty clothes or nice shoes (although these things are very important). It's also all of the other aspects of life: personal relationships, passion for work, interaction with family, desire to build & create art and/or something that is meaningful to the individual. These are the things that make my life rich. But I'm a very 'all over the place' person. That fact keeps me creative but drives those around me crazy. And I want to share that "mad" creativity with my readers in an honest way. But I also don't want to upset my beaus in the process...or friends for that matter.

I encourage people that I'm dating NOT to ready my blog. It is dramatic, over the top, often for show & entertainment, and displays just how I'm feeling at that moment. As I said, I'm all over the place. Those who have known me for 10 plus years know that, accept it, embrace it and, I hope, adore it. But for those just becoming acquainted with me, it can be frustrating. One day I can be, "I hate the color pink, it is vile and anyone wearing is should be killed" and then the next day, re-do the whole store in pink. I am much the same in my relationships. One day I will be dating someone and be soo madly in love I can't see straight and the next day be, "eh, I don't like the way he cuts his food, I'm over it". And then the day after that be like, "cool let's hang out". See the picture?

Being the object of someones desire, especially when you are undirected like me, is entertaining but also frustrating. So I'm not looking for that kind of passion, I'm more entertained by my work passion. I just need people around me who can accept and embrace all the strange and often annoying little things I do. Like being wishy washy, dramatic and inconsistent. Anyway, I don't think I even want a relationship...well at least not today. Tomorrow, maybe I'll meet the man of my dreams, or maybe I already know him, or maybe I'll stay single, or maybe I'll have two boyfriends, or get married but live next door to my husband or maybe I'll get married like 10 times like Liz Taylor or maybe I should marry a rich guy or an artist or a construction worker, or maybe I'll be like my aunt and uncle and never get married but have kids, but ewe maybe I don't want kids, or maybe I'll just go shoe shopping and put on some red lipstick. hmmm okay...I can't figure this all out today.

Jump out the window if you are the object of passion. Flee it if you feel it. Passion goes, boredom remains.

Long Live the Queen

It is a sad, sad day for fashion...British fashion designer Alexander McQueen has been found dead after taking his own life. He was one of those rare, mad geniuses that had the ability to get inside our heads and create all those mad, mad fantasies that most of us only see in dreams. I adored him and his loss is major to all of us who adore glamour and fantasy.

I say, let's celebrate his life and all that he gave us. He is a master and will continue to inspire forever!

CoCo spoke a lot in her memoirs about style not being reserved for the wealthy. Style is something that come from within. I had one of those kinda of topsy turvey upbringings where sometimes I got a big wad of cash to go clothes shopping and other times it was food stamps and $75 for new school clothes. Despite my often limited budget, I refused to ever turn my back on my personal style. I found out from a very young age that being wealthy does not buy you class, and, thanks to Thrift Town, Salvation Army and discount stores, my $75 dollar wardrobe far surpassed many of the other girls wardrobes.

And I'll tell you what, my Mom proved that with some nice china and good lighting, every meal is a glamorous event.

These days thrift stores are shopped out and vintage is as expensive as new apparel, so I try really hard to have beautiful, well made clothes at every price point at BellJar. I want all the glamour girls to walk in and find something that makes them look and feel amazing and confident. So imagine how excited I was when I found Eryn Brinie. Nothing retails for over $150 and the fabrics are beautiful, high quality silks and cottons. The cuts are sophisticated and fashion forward. I know you all are going to fall in love with this line, so please make sure you come in and check it out this weekend! What better time to come in then for our art opening on Friday.

As I have already posted that we are steadily working towards the launch of our website and have been shooting product and doing the oh so fabulous and exciting data entry portion of the job almost everyday. We really are close and I'm starting to get excited. Next week Jasmine and I take off to Vegas for Pool, Project, ENK and Magic for five days. It just so happens that this years events fall during Valentines day which really put a damper on our trip. We had a special hook-up to stay at the
Wyyn Hotel for $20 a night but since it fell over a holiday week we were out of luck. The rooms were going to be $250 a night!!! The reason we go to Vegas and not Coterie in New Work is because it's more affordable! Well $250 a night is not more affordable! So now we are staying at the lovely and fabulous Greek Isles off the strip! Since we are fans of both the low and the high brow here at BellJar, we are going to embrace our stay at this fine establishment and do it old school, brat pack style! Someday we will look back on all this with the fondest of memories as we sip champagne, eat caviar and stay in the finest resorts. Look forward to some glamorous shenanigan, video posts next week!

We have the Valentines show next Friday that we posted yesterday so please come by and say hello before we take off ! Expect love, glamour and excitement! Me and Jasmine promise to flirt with all the singles and to inspire all to feel special.

On the romance front, I am readjusting my earlier post about wanting to fall in love this year...to instead say, maybe I want to fall in love later this year. Or maybe I just want to be like CoCo Chanel and just have many glamorous love affairs throughout the span of my life. As she so wisely said, "There is no time for cut-and-dried monotony. There is time for work. And time for love. That leaves no other time!" I feel the pressure of that fact everyday. A life with out romance is an empty futile existence, but balancing the two leaves me with little time to sleep. So for now, let's stick with the light affairs, dinner and a few nights dancing till after the website goes live. Then we will see what level of love I have time and or patience for.

That gives me a great idea....for the rest of the month I include wise words from CoCo in each of my posts!

Also a few weeks ago a few of my old rockabilly girlfriends and I got decked out and went dancing and I had such a fabulous time. I forgot how much I enjoy dancing...and by dancing, I mean with a partner. I have never grown used to the single style of dancing. I mean I do it, when needed, but I feel flailing and lonely on the dance floor. There is nothing like having a tall guy, hold you, while you dance and lead your body in to the proper moves. It breaks my precious little heart that I live in day and age where so many of these glamorous art forms are nearly dead. As you have all heard me say, too many times, "I was born in the wrong era."

So go fourth my friends and wear a pretty dress, some perfume and maybe even some eyelashes, expect a boy open the door for you and take you to a nice dinner, as you deserve it, you are a lady!!!

How totally typical that I would plan a cute valentines show by booking a sweet couple...and then in perfect dramatic darling form, the couple splits!!! Much like how I have been sabotaging all my own recent dating ventures, just in time for this hallmark holiday!!! But don't be weary, the art is amazing, the show is to die for, and the couple of artist are working it out. Alex Steele

Alex Steele relocated from Miami to San Francisco to study at The San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI). A recent graduate, she now works at The California Academy of Sciences museum in Golden Gate Park, and continues to make art. She has shown at Gallery 666, The Diego Rivera Gallery, and participated in a traveling group show that moved from the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts to Seokyoung University in Korea. She will be showing pieces from her "See How They Smile When They Kill".

An imagined Mirage Hotel tiger habitat in ruins meets the story of Grey Gardens. Wild tigers are juxtaposed with Big Edie and Little Edie (the Beales) of Grey Gardens, relating their territorial instincts and untamed nature. In hued, apocalyptic imagery, white bengal tigers from Sigfried & Roy's tiger habitat at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas remain dominant of their once enclosed territory. The story of Little Edie's burden to stay in Grey Gardens with her mother, Big Edie, is similar in restriction; she is free to go, but lingers in volunteered captivity. The work demonstrates a pull between domestication and innate wildness, and the fall from riches to ruins. The relationships of the characters to their environs evolve into an absurd situation where the Beales become as wild as their home and the white tigers transition into feral beings.

Lafe Eaves

Art is a meditation process that I'm obsessed with. Similar to the effects that Lysergic acid has on the brain I create patterns out of meticulous line work to build a universe based off my own imagination. Within this universe I've made for myself, Animals, geometrical patterns, relics of dark magic, astrological space and temples all come together to interact in a dialog of psychedelic proportions. By using these themes I've allowed myself to sift in and out of consciousness of my own reality and make work that is largely autobiographical but work that opens itself up for the viewer to interpret the piece through their own eyes. That way the interaction between the public and my art becomes something sacred to them based off their own assumptions of what the work is about.

We have been tirelessly working on the website, which includes a whole slew of boring things such as data entry, but it also involves photoshoots- Luckily I'm not only a master style maven, but I'm also a stylist, a make-up artist and a purveyor of all things lovely. And Jasmine dear is an expert at documenting our goings on! After a long weekend of selling you all pretty frocks and a little bit of whining (yes actual whining, not drinking wine) and dinning on our parts, I give you a sneak peak of our recent shoots! xo

Mandy Darling and I had dinner at Maverick, which is so amazing if you have not been please go! WE had a few glasses of wine with dinner and an amazing cheese plate for dessert and then promptly ran out of the shop to fetch the Pig and head home. There was a monsoon outside and we had the tiniest of all tiny umbrellas and by the time we made it back to BellJar we were soaking wet. I had this scratchy throat all week and I woke up this morning with what appears to be a full blown cold. Damn you weather! So much to do! I was planning the BellJar Valentines Day window and it must be installed today! So in honor of getting motivated to do my window with this nasty cold here is some inspiration!

We had super busy week. We finished shooting all the new spring to upload to our new e-commerce site, which we hope to launch next month (I'll keep you posted). We also went to Cala which is a mini trade show held down town at the St Francis to order fabulous new apparel and accessories for summer! We picked up a new jewelery line that is so amazing and some super cute flirty summer dresses! stay tuned! So on top of all the work things going on, I have been feeling really under the weather...I was so exhausted on Tuesday that I literally fell asleep at like 7. So after work last night the Darling gang felt like blowing off some steam and we went to have a drink, and it turned in to many drinks, which lead to me waking up in my fake eyelashes again! So I'm feeling a bit too groggy to worry about stilettos...but I can post a few sneak previews of the up and coming website shots? How's that for an exciting and amazing blog post?

Recently one of my amazing girlfriends had a Mid-Century themed potluck party. If you are asking yourself what this is, invite all your friends over, and have them cook food that looks like this. In usual form, I got dressed to the nines and had 11 glasses of champagne (not really) but had been working so much that I sat down on her perfect 1950's couch and promptly fell asleep. Having grown up with hippie parents who drug me to about a million rock concerts, I can sleep just about anywhere at a moments notice. After an hour or so kitten nap I woke up to a dance party happening around me. I propped myself up, re-applied my lipstick and joined in. My Little nap energized me so much I was one of the last attendees at the party and of course entertaining everyone with all my fabulous and exciting stories...and this is when I found out that I have a key phrase.

SOOOO apparently whenever I'm about to either tell a very important story or am about to make a statement that is life changing, I preface it with..."yoooou guuyyys..." Supposedly even if I'm only talking to one other person.

It goes something like this:

"Yoooou guuyyys my hair looks really cute today!"

"Yoooou guuyyys, Why am I so pretty?!"

"Yoooou guuyyys, the first time I had sex.....(then all the important details)"

"Yoooou guuyyys, I love you, and I'm not just saying that cuz I'm drunk."

We are preparing for the next market and Jasmine pulled out this little gem of a video showing exactly how classy we are, even at 2 am, making nachos at 7-11. I mean a long day of shopping and sipping on nothing but Champagne leaves a girl a little hungry...so what else could we do but get a late night snack from the orange food group...one of my fav food groups. You know, Doritos, Nacho cheese, Cheetos, Velveeta! And I mean the attention to detail making the perfect Nachos really shows how we make every experience Glamour filled! Chanel 2010 Spring Couture

I love me some Chanel. I think if I had it my way I would be lounging drinking champagne in a Chanel Frock every single day for the rest of my life. Chanel for spring has all the fluffy, girlie decadence that makes my little heart purr. The girls look like big pink cupcakes floating down the runway. All the girls that work for always joke they need to make me big bows in every color to wear with all my outfits and I totally agree. The fact that the models for this show have crazy 60's space age do's toped with big bows, what can I say I'm a happy darling. Lets drink champagne in these pretty, pretty dresses!

A Little Bit Country

I really am dying to see Crazy Heart! Anyone that knows me, I'm a little bit country. I love old country I have 10 pairs of cowboy boots, I love to do the two step, I used to be rockabilly and I like a roadside as much as adore the fanciest four star restaurant. I do love to sip fancy savoy cocktails, but I can happily shoot Jim Beam with the boys in a sawdust covered bar with a cactus out front and and old rusty ford. I can watch urban cowboy over and over and over and wish desperately to someday recreate Sissys sexy bull-ride scene at a Gilly's in Texas. I can also shoot a gun, ride a horse western, and have been known to attend the rodeo. It's important to remember glamour comes in all sorts of packages and I prefer to not only have one wrapping! So take Darling to see this movie!

Inspiration and Ramblings

I keep saying that 2010 is my year, and so far it feels like things are really going my way. We are moving along with the website, there has been a good amount of contact from press and I generally feel healthy happy and fulfilled. I have a lot that I want to get done and it seems that the one problem I'm having is waking up early enough in the day t get it all done. I wake up bu 8 usually but after going to the gym and general beauty regiment (shower, curl, eyelash, dress and heel) It seems like I can never leave the house before 11. We still manage to get a lot accomplished at the shop but there is so much more to be done!

1. Photshoots- We need to finish shooting all the new spring, jewelery and sale! We also need to get it uploaded to the site asap! We hope to launch the new e-commerce site next month. Currently we have been shooting on our own, but we need some help for the final push, so anyone who wants to come in and help us for their portfolios, experience and maybe some lovely merch trade, let us know. I mean isn't just hanging around he BellJar girls reason enough? We promise beauty and decor tips as well as champagne!

2. Video Casts. I want to start doing a weekly video on style, shopping, beauty, love, fashion, and random darling ramblings. Do you guys think you care to hear such things as flea market tips, how to apply fake eyelashes or possibly about my ever fascinating and often tragic but always glamorous love life?

3. Prepare the fall buying plan! We seem to keep running out of gorgeous little frocks for all you pretty ladies so we are really getting strategic for fall to make sure this does not continue to be the BellJar trend. (ps thanks for shopping) We Plan to continue on with Funktional, Grace Sun, and Literature Noir amongst others! But will be searching for new lines!

4. Buying trips and gift shows!!!! Loads of travel coming up. Enk, Project, Pool, International Gift Show, Stationary show and more!

5. Road trips to find random treasures. I need to get my pretty butt out there..so many strange and beautiful things to be found and so little time! What if someone else beats me to them!

6. Get hair extensions put in, and buy some damn new fake eye-lashes...mine are tired I tell you. Ps girls only wear Shu Umera..I kid you not they are a dream come true! Recently a boy told me I had anime eyes. I'll take that!

7. Fall in love...I mean really darlings, isn't that the last step for our glamour filled lives? Well darn it if I don't fall in love weekly and I do enjoy all the lovely gifts, dinners and good conversation, (thanks boys) but this year is all about taking a bit of time to not only focus on my world style domination but also to take a bit of me time and have a real personal life again.

8. Take a vacation. Yes, yes I do realize I'm incredibly spoiled and get to travel all the time for work..and believe me I love my job so it never REALLY feels like work, but I desperately need a week or two somewhere exotic where I do nothing but sip on champagne and get massages! Santarini can you here me?

9. I really want to go to the worlds largest garage sale this year! Who wants to drive the truck?

10. Curate amazing art opening for Gallery BellJar- We have the next five months pretty much covered and I'm really excited about the art we will be showing, but I need to ramp it up, attend more art openings and focus some attention on my other true love. Curating art openings!

Tiff and I went and stayed with Tiff's old BFF from Chicago Kelly. Tiff and Kelly are both visual merch execs for Urban and were working on a store install in Pasadena starting Monday. That left us three whole days to shop, eat and enjoy Kelly's darling little Hollywood Chalet! Some of the highlights include an amazing beautiful brunch, including the best Quiche I have ever eaten, Sasha Darlings spicy Bloody Mary's, vintage shopping, Footsies with Lil K, the amazing realization that Tiff can french braid, and a fab new pair of huge sunglasses so that Sasha Darling could go incognito! xoxo

Born December 31, 1975, Springfield, MA.

1994-1997 Massachussetts College of Art

Jason Vivona currently resides in Santa Rosa, CA. He concentrates on creating visual art and music as well as serving as Art Director for WE RIDE AT NIGHT, an art/skateboard company that produces collaborative works with other artists in the form of limited edition skateboards and clothing. Also, Vivona currates WE RIDE AT NIGHT's quarterly group exhibition that showcases the artists that the company collaborates with.

His work has been exhibited in numerous galleries across the United States such as 111 MINNA in SF, The Museum of New Art in Detroit, and Vitale Gallery in Florida to name a few. Although mainly in group exhibitions, his work has been featured solo at Syracuse University and Homestar Modern in Portland, OR. among others

Vivona's work has been published in Juxtapoz, Transworld Skateboarding, WARP, DIW, Skyscraper, RELAX, Portland FunBook 3 and many more.

His newest work is constructed much like that of the abstract expressionists,where a mark is made, and the following mark is a reaction to the initial mark and so on. Vivona, in a sense, abstractly applies an extensive vocabulary of initially identifiable visual elements to create an ever-evolving narrative within the piece. The end result being a completely cohesive, realized image, often laced with curtural reference and satirism.

Vivona directs a portion of his energy to freelance design. In the past he's worked for such companies as Consolidated Skateboards, Fuel TV, Arena Rock Recording Co., Innes Clothing, and Converse. Currently he is producing work for Nike 6.0, Volcom, and Drop City Productions acting as art director and character/set designer for new animated commercials and television programs, partnering up with Adult Swim alum and director of photography, Jeffrey Gardner and writer/photographer, Tod Brilliant.

After an incredibly busy holiday I hit the road and went to the country for a few days. Of course I did some treasure hunting for the BellJar and got some great new vintage scores that we will be putting out next week. Also spent a lot of time reading, cooking on the wood burning stove and chilling in nature, sans high heels. But I think they best day of all was when Dusty, Jas and I hung out at the buckhorn salon and drank, gambled, smoked and danced with the locals. We had a great time, made some fine new friends and I has inspired by all the rad old stuff hanging on the walls!

Been thinking a lot about painting and drawing lately and how it's been missing from my life since the shop has demanded so much of my time. Of course having the gallery keeps me involved in the community but I have been missing the tactile feeling of instrument upon surface. The problem is I feel so completely depleted that I'm not even sure what kind of content I would focus on. Been perusing sights to get inspiration and I'm pretty sure the work of Shelley Reed is just about as close to perfection that an artist can come in my eyes! It's so modern and relevant but obviously is inspired by the great masters like Gillis d'Hondecoeter, Jean Baptiste Charles Claudot. Completely inspired!

Came across his work on facebook and really enjoyed it. He does modern work as well but I love his Punk and New Wave Documentary photos so much! I was just a little kid in the 70's but was so obsessed with them as a teen I almost feel like I was part of it. I was living over in Stinson Beach in the 70's and was already feeling the influences of new wave and by 13 was full on believer, much to my hippie parents dismay. I love to look at photography that makes me nostalgic for something I never really knew. These photos make me wish I was part of all. Or at least, that boys, still dressed as cute as the late 70's early 80's Punk and new wave boys did!!! can I get a hear hear? You can see more of his work or even hire him here..

Bella Bigsby is a self-taught artist. She grew up in Norfolk, England and from childhood has been fascinated by nature and has been driven to explore and describe it through art. Gallery BellJar is pleased to exhibit her oil paintings and printed work this winter.

Bigsby’s work is not intended as a reflection of nature. She is interested in an imagined nature, such as that of the world of fairy tale or myth, a place of mystery where trees and animals might talk.

When depicting animals and birds she often isolates them from a recognizable background, surrounding them with a soft-toned and empty space - a mysterious world for them to inhabit. Rather than simply creating a scene from nature, she places the creatures into an imagined realm separate from real time and place, allowing the soulfulness of her subjects to transcend their physicality.

The BellJar's next show will be a mixed media installation including provocative embroidery, collage, and paper sculpture. Camilla Newhagen’s work has been exhibited in solo exhibitions and juried group shows at galleries and museums, both domestically and internationally. I fear I have no voice. I am awkward and anxious. I don’t remember the details of growing up, but long to tell my story. Making art has become my refuge in which to make sense of the world and my forgotten childhood. Inspired by stories that examine loneliness, responsibility, and choice, I am able to explore the tension between youth and maturity.

My drawings, reminiscent of old photographs, blur the line between the observed, the imagined. While the sculptural work, composed of discarded stuffed animals, suggests the uneasy feeling of lost childhood.

I take the stories I know, stories you may also know, and record them differently. At first glance the work reads like a fairytale, the playful images of children and animals seduce the viewer into the work. Closer observation strips away the innocent appearance and the viewer is confronted with darker stories of skepticism and failure. I combine these peculiar specific images with phrases, which often become titles, to create work that is layered with narrative possibility.

Back from Treasure Hunting

Ok so I was off on a three day treasure hunt and sometimes
I'm surprised what a little grit, ability to dig and perseverance can come up with...It's so hard to find vintage this day and age at a reasonable price that you can bring home and share with the masses. I remember when I started collecting vintage in like 83 everything was like 99 cents- and the racks were overflowing- it's a bit harder now..but I did good for you all this time- here is a quick shot of some of the vintage clothes I found but there is so much more to come and this hardly does my trip justice. please come in and see us??? xo xo xo xo xo

Last night we had the Blog Out Loud event at BellJar and it was a really great event. Thanks so much to the ladies for choosing my space to hold the event as well as all of you for coming out. I was surprised that I learned so much from the other panelist and it was a great reminder how important my blog is to both my business as well as to me personally.
